However Amsterdam said that the investigation is ongoing. On Wednesday evening five men, three of them armed with guns and two with cutlasses, went to Chill’s Grocery and Parlour and attacked Mandeshwal “Chill” Kamalall and his family just as he was about to close for the day.Kamalall said he was assaulted with a cutlass and put to lie on the ground, while two bandits stood guard and the others went into the shop where his wife Dharma Kamalall was with their two children ages 3 and 12.“…they put the gun pon me and knock me in me head and in me face. The bandits did not pursue their request to enter the residential section of the two-storey building, and escaped on bicycles with the day’s sales, $60,000; $35,000 which Kamalall had in his pockets, two cellular phones valued $85,000; $30,000 in phone cards and $35,000 worth of cigarettes.Kamalall said shortly after the men fled, he contacted the Albion Police Station, but was told no vehicle was available to respond to his report; however Police arrived some 30 minutes later.Kamalall sustained injuries to his back and face, while his wife had injuries to her head from being gun-butted.(Andrew Carmichael)last_img read more

Is A Yahoo, Dailymotion Deal Crazy? Like A Fox

If the talks pan out, Yahoo will be joining a long list of companies hyped up by the booming digital video industry. And if anyone can upset Google’s hold on online video, it’s Mayer. The Wall Street Journal is reporting Yahoo wants to buy as much as 75% of the French site, valued at roughly $300 million, in an apparent bid to diversify Yahoo’s revenue stream.“One of the challenges in Yahoo’s business is that we are primarily domestic and we don’t have enough of our business running it from an international basis,” Mayer said at an analyst conference in February. More than 70% of Yahoo’s $5 billion in revenue is from the U.S.Dailymotion, the twelfth-most trafficked video site in the world, was already looking for an U.S. partner, so it could potentially be a match made in heaven. But Yahoo and online video? Really?“It’s interesting, or should I say ‘telling’ that as Yahoo! seeks to reinvent itself, it’s first real, bold step (other than a somewhat yawn-inducing homepage redesign) is to try and capitalize on video” Jay Miletsky, the CEO of MyPod Studios, the StumbleUpon of curated online video, wrote in an email.“I think after Google + failed to make any real splash, Yahoo! wisely decided to skip trying to launch the next pretender to the Facebook throne, and looked to video as the best opportunity for improving their brand among Web users,” added Miletsky.AOL was able to rebrand itself as a media company, so it is certainly a transition that can be made. AOL, which used to provide Internet to households, now owns the Huffington Post and operates a slew of hyperlocal news sites through its Patch initiative.Yahoo could feasibly rebrand itself with a strong online video portfolio, too. Its Yahoo! Screen program is already a step in that direction.Original series like the critically acclaimed Burning Love and Anthony E Zuiker’s Cybergeddon are a higher quality than any of YouTube’s offerings. This year’s Streamy Awards noticed, giving both series trophies.Yahoo’s original programming targets a much older audience than YouTube’s teen and tween demographic, which gives the company another edge in the online video sector.  There’s even a technical advantage to be gained: The only thing that prevented me from watching Yahoo! Screen content over the last couple of months (namely to watch Tom Hank’s animated original Yahoo series, Electric City) was their bad video player. If Yahoo acquires DailyMotion, that obstacle dissolves.  It will take time for these talks to firm up, and have the two companies’ operations integrated. But if this is indeed a match made in heaven, there will be a major new content player on the scene, diversifying the growing video realm even more. 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe Applast_img read more

Ind vs WI: Harper rubs Indians the wrong way

first_imgAustralian Daryl Harper, who was at the centre of an umpiring controversy in the first India-West Indies Test in Kingston last month, has drawn criticism for his insensitive remarks about Indian players in a private travelogue-cum-diary.In the diary, he seems to have uncharitably taunted the Indians while admitting some of the errors he made in the June 20-23 match. He has also chided the International Cricket Council (ICC), his employers, for not taking action against India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and other unnamed players, who made disparaging remarks against umpiring decisions after India won by 63 runs.Aussie umpire Daryl Harper has hit back over poor umpiring allegations. APHarper, who was officiating in his 95th Test, gave some debatable decisions and admitted them too in his travelogue, titled ‘Getting The Runs… 21 – A postscript from Philadelphia’. The 59-year-old Aussie, in his 28th year as an umpire, also admitted his mistake of failing to notice leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo’s no-ball, off which he dismissed Dhoni in the second innings.”There was one LBW against Harbhajan Singh that would have been reversed had the Decision Review System (DRS) been available. I also failed to detect a no ball when Bishoo’s back foot touched the side or return crease. It’s about as common as Indians eating beef burgers,” wrote the ever-smiling umpire.Harper admits making a second mistake. “Another decision that was notable involved Virat Kohli. He flashed wide of his body at a short ball that passed well outside his body down the leg side. He clearly gloved the ball and was given out. Replays could not confirm that my decision was right… and they could not confirm that my decision was wrong,” he writes.advertisementOn Friday, Harper himself emailed the travelogue to MAIL TODAY, saying that it was the media publication that he was authorising for use. He had earlier e-mailed it only to his family members and friends.Harper also penalised debutant pacer Praveen Kumar by preventing him from bowling for the rest of the first innings, as per the rules, after he repeatedly ran on to the ‘danger area’ of the pitch. When he asked Dhoni to remove him from the attack, the captain, according to Harper, said: “We’ve had issues with you before, Daryl.””Oh dear, I interpreted that comment as meaning that I should just leave them all alone and mind my own business. So, Dhoni and I didn’t exchange any pleasantries for the duration, although I did enjoy telling him that his over rate was down from time to time,” he disclosed. He pointed out that Praveen had played 52 ODIs before his Test debut, so he ought to have known the rules. “I didn’t have my best game of the year but (ICC) referee Jeff Crowe, who observed every ball, calculated that I had managed to get 94 per cent of all my decisions correct. That analysis was confirmed from HQ in our Dubai office,” he wrote. The Indian players’ criticism of umpiring infuriated Harper, an otherwise friendly soul.Although they didn’t take either umpire’s name, lest they should be penalised by the ICC, their target was clearly Harper, who has officiated in 174 One-day Internationals. The ICC media department informed Harper about the negative reports. “One Indian paper claimed that I had made six errors against India; another claimed it was only five. Someone pulled the race card and someone suggested that I had always had it in for the Indians,” he wrote in his 2,342-word travelogue.”The captain was quoted making a derogatory comment about my efforts and an ‘unnamed player’ was quoted as saying that the whole team wanted me out of the action. This was bizarre stuff. Obviously, I should never have applied the laws of cricket to Indian players.”Harper was to officiate in the third Test too – the first one ever that Dominica would host – but he withdrew after the first Test controversies. His contract with the ICC ended on June 30.In the ongoing the three-Test series, the DRS, which assists on-field umpires in giving certain decisions with help of replays, is not being used as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) doesn’t trust it. Had the DRS been in use, these controversies could have been avoided.Harper also pointed out the low quality cameras that were used and hinted that they contributed to the controversies. He is annoyed with the ICC for ignoring the Indian players’ comments on umpiring.”If someone from the ICC management had shown an ounce of leadership, the referee’s log should have quashed the nonsense immediately,” he said.advertisementA day after the first Test, on June 24, Harper’s became grandfather for the first time when Jack Edward Harper was born to his daughter-in-law Kate and son Tim. That brought a smile to his lips amidst the tension. From the Daryl diaryI failed to detect a no ball when West Indian Bishoo’s back foot touched the side or return crease (in the first Test). It’s about as common as Indians eating beef burgers.Someone pulled the race card and someone suggested that I had always had it in for the Indians.Obviously, I should never have applied the laws of cricket to Indian players. If someone from ICC management had shown an ounce of leadership, the referee’s log should have quashed the nonsense immediately.I correctly answered 96.7 per cent of appeals in the last 10 Tests against India. Ohio State mens hockey ready for evenly matched Big Ten Tournament game

Sophomore forward Tyler Lundey (23) attempts a shot during a game against Michigan March 2 at Nationwide Arena. OSU lost, 4-3.Credit: Ben Jackson / For The LanternWhen it was announced that the Big Ten men’s hockey conference would come together for its inaugural season, many people had high expectations. With the regular season over and postseason play about to begin, it has become clear those expectations were right on the money. A competitive and skilled conference campaign has set up a tasty tournament bracket. All six of the conference’s teams are set to travel to Saint Paul, Minn., this weekend hoping to become the first-ever Big Ten hockey champions.Minnesota and Wisconsin are the top seeds respectively, so both receive a bye in the quarterfinals, while No. 3-seed Michigan is slated to play No. 6 Penn State for the chance to play the Badgers.Minnesota awaits the winner of the other quarterfinal between No. 4 Ohio State and No. 5 Michigan State. The Buckeyes went 1-0-3 with two shootout wins against the Spartans in the regular season, and first-year coach Steve Rohlik said his team knows how tough the game will be.“(The game is between) two teams that are evenly matched, you saw that in our results this year. They block a lot of shots, they’ve got a very good goaltender, (and) they’re scoring more goals now,” Rohlik said, referring to Spartan sophomore goalie Jake Hildebrand. “So we’ve got to play our best hockey game Thursday night, there’s no question.”For the team that claims the prize, a Big Ten championship will bring with it an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The national tournament is made up of 16 teams: the six conferences’ postseason tournament champions plus 10 at-large bids. The NCAA selection committee uses a series of calculations to figure out the at-large bids, and those calculations are replicated by something called the PairWise rankings.According to those rankings, the Big Ten can be split up into two blocks of three: those who look to be in the tournament no matter what, and those who require a Big Ten title to get there. The former is made up of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, while the latter is composed of Ohio State, Michigan State and Penn State. The tournament implications at stake this weekend don’t seem to faze OSU junior forward Ryan Dzingel, the leading scorer in the Big Ten this season who was just named to the all-Big Ten team earlier in the week.“We’re all really excited. The CCHA (Central Collegiate Hockey Association) tournament last year was really cool and there was a lot of publicity, so I can’t even imagine how much it will be with the Big Ten,” Dzingel said. “Playing in an awesome rink with these great teams is going to be a lot of fun.”Rohlik, a Saint Paul native, said the tournament’s location is going to make the occasion that much more special.“A lot of people say that baby boys are born here (in Ohio) with a football in their crib, up there (in Minnesota) it’s a pair of hockey skates,” Rohlik said. “It’s the culture, its kind of what Minnesota is. It’s certainly one of the big spots for hockey across the U.S.”With the hockey-savvy eyes of the Minnesota crowd upon it, OSU’s high-powered offense will need to find a way past an MSU defensive corps that has blocked the most shots in the Big Ten.The prize awaiting the Buckeyes if they manage to do that: another shot at the best team in the nation, in the Gophers own backyard. The Buckeyes and Spartans are set to face off at 8 p.m. Thursday. read more

Today giants Barcelona and Real Madrid fell in La Liga

first_imgIn the first shock of a very busy football Wednesday, FC Barcelona crashed at Leganes and Real Madrid did even worst against Sevilla FC.What a day for giants Barcelona and Real Madrid in La Liga, they both lost their respective midweek match this Wednesday in their visit to different stadiums. Both the Catalan club and Los Blancos reached this point in the competition tied with 13 points and both had complicated visits to Leganes and Sevilla, respectively. The Catalan club played earlier and they even got ahead in the scoreboard with a beautiful Coutinho volley, but the second half was a complete disaster in which Gerard Pique committed several mistakes in the span of just a couple of minutes. The first one he made was after only six minutes of the second half, he failed to cover the space where a cross was sent by Jonathan Gonzalez that El Zhar quickly responded to with a poor defensive coverage by Thomas Vermaelen. Not even a minute had passed when Pique was committing another mistake and literally gifted the ball to Oscar Rodriguez for the shocking second goal scored by Leganes. This was a horror show for the Catalan club, who were losing their opportunity of getting ahead in La Liga table just minutes before the match between Sevilla and Real Madrid started. Lionel Messi’s absence was one of the biggest news of this match, the Catalan club lost a match as the leader of the competition against the last place for the first time ever.⏰ Full time in Butarque⚽ Leganés 2-1 FC Barcelona👟 El Zhar & Óscar / Coutinho🔵🔴 #LeganésBarça pic.twitter.com/niS73hE81Z— FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) September 26, 2018Sevilla responded accordingly vs Real Madrid. But things weren’t going to get any easier for Real Madrid either, as they were visiting Sevilla FC at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium and were in for a truly horrible night when they realized what life is without Cristiano Ronaldo playing on their side. The first half was more than enough for them to get a beating by the Andalusian side, Andre Silva scored a brace before the 20th minute of the match, and French striker Wissam Ben Yedder scored the third goal before halftime. The biggest flop for Real Madrid on this match was Marcelo, who once again proved that he is one of the worst defenders Los Blancos have and he cannot react well under pressure. But Sevilla was the squad that needed to take all the credit this Wednesday, they really needed a night like the one they got today against one of La Liga’s leaders. All Real Madrid players were eager to play the second half, they came back to the pitch early and were adamant about not committing any more mistakes like the ones they made during the first half. All Sevilla needed was to protect the advantage they already had, but it wasn’t going to be easy because Real Madrid came into the field completely focused for the second half.⚽️ 17′ – Andre Silva 🔥⚽️ 21′ – Andre Silva 🔥#SevillaFCRealMadrid pic.twitter.com/BCOkjOVye5James Rodriguez, Real MadridZidane hails ‘quality’ James Rodriguez after Real Madrid’s win Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Zinedine Zidane reserved special praise for James Rodriguez after his starring role in Real Madrid’s 3-2 win over Levante.— LaLiga (@LaLigaEN) September 26, 2018But despite having a long 45 minutes to get back in the game, Real Madrid was never able to concentrate and Sevilla was able to manage the result for the remains of this match with the support of their supporters at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium. And thus, this Wednesday will be remembered by Real Madrid and Barcelona for a long time, as the day in which both Spanish giants lost their respective matches and lost the chance to take the lead in La Liga. But the worst part about all this, is that Real Madrid is the squad that has the least chances of recovering from this massive blow because they will have to play against Atletico Madrid next weekend. Barcelona on their part, play at home as well but against Athletic Club and they may have a better opportunity to take La Liga’s lead this early in the competition. But both squads proved today that they are not as invincible as everybody thought they actually were, any club in La Liga can defeat them this season considering how poor they played this Wednesday. This turns the domestic competition in Spain into a more exciting tournament, because now things are more balanced than during previous years.2⃣⏱ | 3-0 | Comienza la segunda parte. 📱 https://t.co/w82EoEpWRh💻 https://t.co/Kyw2Cdgtua#RMLiga | #HalaMadrid pic.twitter.com/ge1PmiOaCo— Real Madrid C.F.
