Members of a Bay Area family were among those injured in the Indonesia suicide bombings when an explosion tore through a bustling restaurant just as they sat down for dinner. Six members of the Suprato family, the only Americans known to have been injured in the blasts, were on the first floor of the three-story Raja Cafe noodle and steakhouse, in the bustling tourist center of Kuta, when a bomb went off on the floor above them Saturday night. Near-simultaneous bombs also went off at two packed seafood cafes in the Jimbaran beach resort. The attacks, which Indonesian authorities suspect were connected to the al-Qaida-linked Southeast Asian terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah, killed 26 people and injured 101. The Suprato family was in Jakarta earlier in the week to attend a wedding and had gone to Bali for a short vacation, said Titievi “Mel” Suprato, the matriarch of the family who stayed behind in San Francisco. “They say they go to the restaurant, they want to order something, just order something, not eat yet and the bomb come up. They don’t know anything,” she told KGO-TV. All six survived, as well as an Indonesian relative who was with them, but with various degrees of injury. Titievi Suprato’s 70-year-old husband, Jusos, and her 56-year-old brother, who lives in Jakarta, suffered the most severe wounds when wood and debris fell on top of them. Her eldest son, Richard Suprato; her daughter and son-in-law, Soviana and Duke Ly; and her grandsons, 15-year-old Sean and 4-year-old Jeremy, escaped with minor cuts and bruises. Titievi Suprato said she knew something was wrong before her cousin called from Jakarta with the news. “I wake up still in the bed and my heart jumping. I feel what happening,” she said. Most of the family planned to return to San Francisco in a few days, but Jusos Suprato’s injuries likely will force him to stay in Indonesia for several more weeks, she said. – Associated Press 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
