Views expressed on the companies mentioned in this article are those of the writer and therefore may differ from the official recommendations we make in our subscription services such as Share Advisor, Hidden Winners and Pro. Here at The Motley Fool we believe that considering a diverse range of insights makes us better investors. Billionaire investor Warren Buffett’s largest holding, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), has performed well in recent years. For example, since I wrote about the stock in November 2018 (I said it had the potential to deliver ‘spectacular gains’, by the way) it has risen about 200%.Is Apple stock still worth buying after that kind of share price rise? I think it is. Here’s a look at three reasons I’d buy Apple shares for my portfolio today.5G is here – and shares of this ‘sleeping giant’ could be a great way for you to potentially profit!According to one leading industry firm, the 5G boom could create a global industry worth US$12.3 TRILLION out of thin air…And if you click here we’ll show you something that could be key to unlocking 5G’s full potential…Apple: incredible growthThe first reason I’m bullish on AAPL is that the company appears to be in the middle of a ‘supercycle’ for a lot of its products. There’s been a lot of talk recently about Apple potentially benefiting from a huge 5G ‘upgrade cycle’ where consumers trade up to 5G-compatible handsets. However, the company’s second-quarter results for the period ended 27 March suggest there’s more to the upgrade growth story than just the iPhone. Other products, such as the iPad and the Mac, are seeing enormous growth too. In Q2, these two products saw year-on-year revenue growth of 79% and 70% respectively. Overall, revenue was up 54% year-on-year. That’s an incredible level of growth.Huge services growthThe second reason I like Apple stock is the growth in the high-margin services division. This division includes iCloud, App Store, and Apple Music. In the last quarter, revenue was up 27% year-on-year to $17bn.Looking ahead, the growth potential here is significant, in my view. With Apple charging a 30% commission on many paid apps and in-app purchases, the company looks set to generate hundreds of billions in revenue from services over the next decade.Massive share buybacksFinally, Apple continues to buy back a ton of its stock. Last week, the company said it had authorised $90bn in share buybacks. That’s significantly higher than last year’s $50bn outlay.Share buybacks reduce the number of outstanding shares in the market and increase the value of the remaining shares (because earnings per share become higher). So this massive buyback should help Apple’s share price over time.ValuationTurning to the valuation, I continue to think Apple’s price tag is reasonable. Currently, the stock trades on a forward-looking price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of about 30. That’s not a bargain. However, I don’t think it’s excessive either.I’d buy Warren Buffett’s top stock todayOf course, there are risks to the investment case here. One is the global chip shortage, which is impacting a lot of technology companies. Apple said last week the shortage could cost the company $3bn-$4bn in lost revenue this quarter.Another is in relation to the App Store. Recently, Apple has been challenged by lawmakers and companies that say its App Store has too much power and costs too much. It’s also worth pointing out that Apple operates in a very competitive industry. Competitors (like Samsung and Google) are always trying to steal market share.Overall however, I believe Apple continues to have a lot of investment appeal. I’d be happy to buy this Warren Buffett stock today. I’m sure you’ll agree that’s quite the statement from Motley Fool Co-Founder Tom Gardner. But since our US analyst team first recommended shares in this unique tech stock back in 2016, the value has soared. What’s more, we firmly believe there’s still plenty of upside in its future. In fact, even throughout the current coronavirus crisis, its performance has been beating Wall St expectations. And right now, we’re giving you a chance to discover exactly what has got our analysts all fired up about this niche industry phenomenon, in our FREE special report, A Top US Share From The Motley Fool. Jack White Releases New Singles For The First Time In 4 Years [Listen]

first_imgFollowing a mysterious video posted in December called “Servings and Portions from my Boarding House Reach”, the buzz around Jack White’s new album has growing. Called Boarding House Reach, the album will mark White’s third solo album and the first formal music project he’s released since 2014’s Lazaretto.Jack White Teases New Solo Project In Mysterious Video Featuring Neal Evans & Louis Cato [Watch]Today, White dropped the lead single off the new album, “Connected By Love” and its subsequent music video directed by Pasqual Gutierrez, as well as a second track called “Respect Commander”. Both of these numbers also feature drummer Louis Cato (Beyoncé/Q-Tip/John Legend), keyboardist Neal Evans (Soulive/Talib Kweli/John Scofield), bassist Charlotte Kemp Muhl (The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger), percussionist Bobby Allende (David Byrne), and backing vocalists Ann and Regina McCrary of the gospel trio The McCrary Sisters.“Connected By Love” was produced and recorded in three different locations across the United States—Sear Sound in New York City, Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, and Third Man Studio in Nashville—marking the first time White has ever recorded an album in the cities of L.A. or NYC. Both songs will appear on the upcoming album, Boarding House Reach. As White told Rolling Stone, the song was written in his Nashville apartment. He elaborated, “I just started humming notes out loud, staring out the window. After that, you really can’t explain it. You just have to get out of the way and let it happen. And you don’t really notice it as it’s happening.” He also told the media outlet that originally the refrain said “I’m Infected By Love”, adding, “I thought ‘Well, people won’t get that metaphor — they’ll turn that into, ‘Well, Do you have an STD, or something?’ [laughs] It might hurt the rest of the messages of the song if I kept that as the main thing. So I changed ‘Infected’ to ‘Connected’ and then started to feed off of that.”You can watch the music video for “Connected By Love” and listen to “Respect Commander” below. For those who are digging what they’re hearing, you can purchase limited-edition 7″ vinyls of the tracks at Jack White’s Third Man Records’ stores in Nashville and Detroit this Saturday, January 13th.last_img read more

Report: DEA launching probe into how Angels’ Tyler Skaggs obtained drugs

first_imgOne federal law enforcement agent, speaking on condition of anonymity, told ESPN that fentanyl has been showing up “everywhere, even in marijuana.”Skaggs’ family retained prominent attorney Rusty Hardin to represent them when the Southlake Police Department opened its investigation into the pitcher’s death. The family is also seeking to learn how Skaggs came into possession of the opioids that contributed to his death, including who supplied them.In a statement released by the family when the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s office released its autopsy report on Aug. 30, it was suggested that an Angels employee might have been responsible for supplying the drugs.“We were shocked to learn that it may involve an employee of the Los Angeles Angels. We will not rest until we learn the truth about how Tyler came into possession of these narcotics, including who supplied them,” the statement said. The ESPN report confirmed that no Angels team employee has been connected to Skaggs’ death or targeted as of yet in the investigation being conducted by the Southlake PD. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error “We continue to cooperate with law enforcement on this important matter,” Angels team spokesperson Marie Garvey said in statement in the ESPN report. After the autopsy report came out, it was reported that Major League Baseball will conduct its own investigation into the matter and will discuss the possibility of more widespread testing for opioids with the players’ association.“For several reasons, including the tragic loss of a member of our fraternity and other developments happening in the country as a whole, it is appropriate and important to re-examine all of our drug protocols relating to education, treatment and prevention,” union head Tony Clark said in a statement earlier this month.center_img The Drug Enforcement Administration has launched an investigation to determine where Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs obtained the drugs that were in his system at the time of his July 1 death in Southlake, Texas, ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” reported on Wednesday. An autopsy released Aug. 30 found evidence of fentanyl, oxycodone and ethanol along with alcohol in Skaggs’ system when he was found dead in his hotel room. The fentanyl drew the attention of federal investigators, the report, which quoted anonymous sources, said. The report noted that the DEA frequently gets involved in fentanyl cases in an effort to track down the source of the drug. The powerful synthetic opioid has been linked to a number of high-profile drug-related deaths, including musicians Prince, Tom Petty and Mac Miller. Finding the sources who are behind the distribution of fentanyl has become a high priority.Skaggs, 27, was found unresponsive in his hotel room hours before the Angels were to begin a series against the Texas Rangers, having choked on his own vomit.last_img read more

Inside Conditions…Only a mother could love

first_imgO.J. SIMPSON (AP Photo/File)by Aubrey BruceHey guys and dolls. Happy Mothers’ Day to you all.Now I always hear the loud and clear message of mothers who are forced to wear the hats of both parents when for whatever reason the absentee fathers are not on the scene.I am also here to point out that there are a few fathers out there that don kitchen aprons and braid their daughters’ hair when mothers are not part of the family dynamic.By the way, the only non-athletes that I will include in this communiqué are Genghis Khan and Adolf Hitler.Let’s begin with O.J. Simpson an African American athlete who a significant percentage of White America swears is the great, great, great, (and many more times removed) gre……..at grandson of the aforementioned Genghis Khan and a direct descendant of Satan.Whatever theories may exist about the genealogy of Simpson well let’s just say they remain just that.We do know that Simpson was born July 9, 1947 in San Francisco, CA’ the son of Eunice Durden Simpson and Jimmy Lee Simpson. What makes his athletic accomplishments so incredible is the fact that as a child, Simpson developed rickets and wore braces (his mother made home-made braces with a bar) on his legs until the age of five. Now combine this scenario with the fact that his parents separated in 1952. Now birthing and rearing a physically challenged child by a single mom in any era is daunting but being an African American mother having a handicapped child in addition to facing medical, economic and socially challenging circumstances simultaneously in itself had to daunting and at best uncertain in regards to the outcome. After all that his mother did just to insure that the “Juice” lived an ordinary life, he turned out to do extraordinarily good and bad things. This is for all of you young mothers out there. No matter how early and thoroughly you may train a child, there are social and psychological influences both covert and overt that may wield more impact than one could ever suspect. There had to be a certain amount of angst and uncertainty as far as the confidence of young O.J and his mother in regards to him just functioning as a normal child not even considering a potential athletic career. Can’t you hear his mom trying to instill a basic confidence in him regarding just walking every day? “O.J you can do it, just walk a little farther, I know you can do it, it may be painful but you are going to be alright.”In spite of all of the odds; a mother’s love surely kept the faith. Also poor Black folks were nutritionally as well as economically deprived because rickets historically has been associated with seamen who were deprived of vitamin C during extended voyages at sea.Muhammad Ali is another icon that jumps out at me when it comes to celebrating the sanctity of motherhood.Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr., was born on January 17, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky to Odessa O’Grady Clay and Cassius Marcellus Clay Sr.We can all be reasonably sure that at a young age young Cassius Clay, (his pre Muslim) name probably did not suffer from a severe lack of confidence nor did he seriously listen to anyone else but himself. However that may have been a good thing. As a result, making his own decisions and marching to a different drum beat sculpted him into the man that he was.I can imagine his mom asking him the question;” Cassius, what are you thinking about?” I can also envision his response. “Mama I Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. If my mind can conceive it and my heart can believe it, then I can achieve it. Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing. To be a great champion you must believe you are the best. If not pretend you are. What you are thinking is what you are becoming. Don’t count the days, make the days count. What keeps me going is goals. I know where I’m going and I know the truth, and I don’t have to be what you want me to be. I’m free to be what I want. Live everyday as if it were your last because someday you’re going to be right. Age is whatever you think it is. You are as old as you think you are. If they can make penicillin out of moldy bread, then they can sure make something out of you. Silence is golden when you can’t think of a good answer.”I think that it would be hard to get a word in with Muhammad Ali at any age, by anyone. The Hitler and Khan thing at the beginning was just a tease. My point was and continues to be that whether we are athletes, fans of sport or a hybrid of both we can make the lives of those around better and it is more often than not that we can do so when we draw from the voices and wisdom that our mothers lend to us as we travel the road of eternity. In the early 1970s when I was struggling to be published I considered giving up. One particular day I called my mother whining. She said; “Peanut be like Job (jobe) wait on your change.” From that day forward I focused on me and not my circumstances.
